The regrettable endorsement by the King of Spain of the Qatari regime that finances terrorism
ACOM laments the disappointing, unqualified support that King Felipe VI continues to offer to the regime of the Emir of Qatar (1), expressing his solidarity with that satrapy after the Iranian attack on Al Udeid Air Base, as well as praising the emir’s supposed role in achieving the ceasefire between Iran and Israel.
It is saddening that, while maintaining silence in the face of Iranian attacks against the population of a friendly and allied country like Israel, the Spanish Crown hastens to offer completely uncritical support to a regime that has systematically converted its investments into levers of political influence and has provided refuge and protection to leaders of terrorist organizations like Hamas and, in previous decades, Al Qaeda.
Over the last decade, Qatar has deployed a massive and sophisticated global lobbying effort, orchestrating generous contributions to universities, think tanks, media outlets, and Western political parties to shape public opinion and gain governmental favors. With nearly $330 billion managed through its sovereign wealth fund, Qataris don’t make conventional economic investments: they buy political will. Their attempts to corrupt international institutions alone, from the well-known Qatargate case involving the EU (2) to the purchase of the FIFA World Cup (3), should be sufficient for the Royal Household to adopt a more cautious and moderate stance in its praise of a regime with these characteristics.
This influence operation has made Qatar a decisive player in strategic sectors of the Spanish economy (4), but its objective is not financial returns. Instead, it’s about exercising lobbying and indirect political influence in favor of a medieval satrapy.
Globally, its systematic support for subversive, anti-Western, and pro-Islamist movements in academic circles (5) has been widely documented and denounced. These strategies are inseparable from its funding and support for the Muslim Brotherhood and other groups that export radical Islamism and Islamism. And, associated with all of this, its promotion of the most violent campaigns and threats against Jewish communities worldwide, including in our own country.
Qatar’s fundamental contradiction lies in its double game: while maintaining allied military bases on its territory, its funds systematically flow to terrorist organizations. Qatar is not a reliable ally for Western democracies: it has hosted and protected the political and military leadership of Hamas, providing them with financial, logistical, and diplomatic resources.
Qatar’s active involvement in the October 7 terrorist attacks against Israel is indisputable. For 15 years, Hamas built a demonic network of tunnels spanning over 500 kilometers, allowing terrorists to entrench themselves under homes, hospitals, schools, and mosques, and from there launch their attacks using the population as human shields. These underground infrastructures not only facilitated the furtive transfer of weapons and terrorists but also enabled the mass kidnapping of Israeli civilian hostages.
All of this was carried out with the funding of over 1.5 billion Euros from the emir who today receives the fervent praise of the King of Spain.
It’s especially revealing that, if Qatar had a genuine will to mediate constructively, the Israeli hostages would have been released within hours of their abduction, and those responsible for the massacre, who are being hosted like royalty by the emir, would have been handed over to international justice. However, Qatar has cynically chosen to deliberately prolong the conflict, using the victims’ suffering as diplomatic leverage.
The King of Spain adopting a stance of support for Qatar, particularly in the context of its supposed mediating role between Iran and Israel, represents a grave error in political and moral judgment. Equating the responsibilities of a theocratic regime that sponsors international terrorism with those of the only democracy in the Middle East constitutes a morally unacceptable equidistance.
This posture not only compromises the credibility of the Spanish Crown but also sends a disastrous signal to the international community about Spain’s willingness to tolerate and whitewash regimes that systematically undermine international security and stability.
